UAE VAT Returns: 31 August 2026 Deadline Requires More Than a Last-Minute Submission

# UAE VAT Returns: 31 August 2026 Deadline Requires More Than a Last-Minute Submission

The UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has listed **Monday, 31 August 2026** as the final deadline for filing VAT returns. For VAT-registered businesses whose filing period ends on 31 July 2026, or whose tax period and filing cycle make this date applicable, the deadline is also the date by which any VAT payable should be settled.

The announcement is a useful reminder that VAT compliance is not simply an online form to complete at the end of the period. The quality of the return depends on the records, reconciliations and decisions prepared beforehand.

## What businesses should check now

Start with the sales ledger. Reconcile VAT invoices and credit notes to the accounting records and review whether taxable, zero-rated, exempt and out-of-scope supplies have been classified correctly. Pay particular attention to customer deposits, advance invoices, exports and transactions where the tax point may not match the date cash was received.

Next, review purchases and expenses. Input tax should be supported by valid tax invoices and linked to business activities. The team should identify blocked or restricted input tax, check supplier TRNs where appropriate and ensure that credit notes and employee-related expenses have been treated consistently.

The return should then be reconciled to the general ledger and supporting schedules. Differences between the VAT report, sales and purchase ledgers, bank receipts and the return should be investigated before submission—not explained after an FTA query.

## Payment is part of compliance

Filing the return and paying the VAT liability are separate actions. A business that submits on time but delays settlement may still face exposure to administrative penalties or cash-flow pressure. Finance teams should confirm the payable amount, payment method and internal approval process early enough for any issue to be resolved before the deadline.

Where the return shows a repayment position, the supporting documentation should be ready. The FTA may request evidence, and a clean reconciliation helps demonstrate how the refund amount was calculated.

## Three practical steps before 31 August

**1. Close the data.** Lock the relevant sales and purchase period and collect missing invoices, credit notes and customs or export evidence.

**2. Reconcile the return.** Compare the VAT workings with the accounting system, prior-period adjustments and the general ledger. Investigate unusual movements instead of carrying them forward automatically.

**3. Submit and settle early.** Do not leave filing or payment until the final afternoon. Build in time for authorisation, EmaraTax access issues and corrections.

The FTA’s announcement does not change the underlying principle: a VAT return is a financial statement of the business’s tax position for the period. Accurate source records, a documented review and timely payment are the best protection against avoidable errors.

For businesses approaching the 31 August deadline, the practical question is not only whether the return can be filed. It is whether every figure can be explained, supported and defended if the FTA asks for clarification.
