Small Business Relief Does Not Mean No Tax Return: UAE Businesses Must Still File by 30 September

The UAE Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has issued an important reminder for businesses relying on Small Business Relief: relief from Corporate Tax does not mean relief from filing, registration or record-keeping obligations.

In its 3 August 2026 notice, the FTA confirmed that eligible Taxable Persons must continue to register for Corporate Tax, submit the required simplified Corporate Tax return and maintain records supporting the information provided. The Authority also reminded businesses that any Corporate Tax due must be paid within the prescribed legal deadline.

For businesses whose financial year ended on 31 December 2025, the final deadline is 30 September 2026.

What Small Business Relief actually does

Small Business Relief treats an eligible UAE resident person as having no taxable income for Corporate Tax purposes where revenue does not exceed AED 3 million for the relevant tax period and all previous tax periods, subject to the applicable rules and conditions.

The relief must be elected through the Corporate Tax return. It is not automatic, and eligibility alone does not remove the obligation to file a return.

The benefit is a simplified filing process: eligible businesses generally provide less information than a business calculating and reporting taxable income in the ordinary way. But “simplified” should not be confused with “optional”.

The records businesses should prepare

The FTA says records must be maintained so it can verify revenue, taxable income and eligibility for the relief. In practice, a business should be able to support its position with organised accounting records, sales invoices, bank information, expense documentation and a clear reconciliation from the accounting system to the figures reported in the return.

This is particularly important where revenue is close to the AED 3 million threshold. Businesses should review whether revenue has been measured consistently, whether related transactions have been captured correctly and whether the same basis has been applied across the relevant tax periods.

Record-keeping is not just an administrative exercise. It gives management an early warning if the business is approaching the threshold and provides an evidence trail if the FTA asks questions later.

Three practical steps before the deadline

First, confirm eligibility. Review revenue for the current and previous tax periods and check the conditions that apply to the business. Do not rely only on a year-to-date sales figure without considering the full relevant period.

Second, prepare the evidence file. Gather the accounting reports and source documents that support revenue, expenses and the business’s status. Resolve unexplained differences before submitting the return.

Third, submit and pay on time. Eligible businesses must actively elect Small Business Relief in the return. If Corporate Tax is payable, payment should be arranged by the same legal deadline.

The FTA’s message is straightforward: Small Business Relief reduces the tax burden for qualifying businesses, but it does not remove the discipline of compliance. A business that files early, keeps reliable records and documents its eligibility will be in a much stronger position than one that treats the relief as a reason to postpone preparation.

For 31 December 2025 year-end businesses, 30 September is close enough to require action now. The right question is not simply, “Do we qualify?” It is also, “Can we prove it, file it and support it on time?”
